Visas

Students from countries outside the European Union must have a valid visa for the entire duration of the course.
The visa is issued by the Italian Embassy/Consulate of that particular country.

We suggest requesting a multiple-entry Schengen visa in order to be allowed to travel to other Schengen countries.
 
IMPORTANT: some foreigners may not be permitted to leave Italy and re-enter the country until the permit of stay is issued. Check with the Italian Embassy/Consulate in your country.

To receive documents on time, we suggest you make the request at least two months before: there is a one-month wait from the time the Embassy receives all documentation to when they issue the visa.

The school supports the candidate in the visa process and sends the necessary references to the Italian Embassy/Consulate of that particular country. The required documents to obtain a visa vary depending on the country of origin of the candidate.

 

 

The following documents are generally required for obtaining a visa:

 

  • Valid passport (must be valid for at least three months after the end of the course)
    Passport photos;
  • Copy of the admissions letter from the School,
  • Copy of rental contract or declaration of a place to stay for the duration of the course;
  • Proof of economic availability to cover the costs of participation and room and board for the entire duration of the course, eg. a copy of a bank statement or a financial guarantee from a company sponsor;
  • Copy of health insurance documentation valid for the period of the course.

Health Insurance


Basic Health insurance may also be obtained in Italy. The fee may be paid at the Post office by filling out the bollettino postale with the following information: INA ASSITALIA Via del Tritone 181 00100 Roma, account number: 71270003.
In 2006 the cost for six months of health insurance was 49.00 EUR and for 12 months 98.00 EUR.

IMPORTANT: Once a non-EC citizen has obtained the permit of stay, it is possible to join the Italian National Health System and obtain a health card: “Libretto Sanitario” in order to be able to choose a general practitioner (“medico di base”).

The health card is valid for the duration of the permit of stay - 12 months and there is a fee.  The health card “libretto sanitario” may be requested from the Azienda Servizi Sanitari. For information call +39 040 3995111 or 800991170 or click here

The Permit of Stay “permesso di soggiorno”


All non EC citizens must request the “permesso di soggiorno” within 8 working days of arrival in Italy.

 
EC citizens no longer require a permit of stay. After three months in Italy they must register at the office of the “Anagrafe.” For stays less than 3 months no formal documents are necessary.

Procedure

Non-EC Citizens: Go first to the designated post offices, Patronati, or the offices of the Municipality to obtain the kit with forms for requesting the permit of stay. Forms must be filled in and the required documentation attached. Once the requested documentation is delivered to the post office, the applicant will be given a receipt. The receipt is proof that the request was submitted.
Later, the applicant will receive a registered letter inviting him/her to the Immigration Office “Questura – Ufficio Stranieri” where he or she will be fingerprinted and will have to deliver 4 photos for his/her permit of stay.
 

Necessary documents:

  • Completed and signed application form (Module 1) which can be found in the documentation kit. (Only if the request is done through the post office)
  • Photocopy of the letter certifying the course of study to be attended, certified by the Italian Embassy/Consulate when the study visa is issued (Only for non EU members).  For EU members the School will issue a certificate of attendance
  • 4 passport-sized photos
  • Photocopies of the passport and the entrance stamp
  • A tax stamp (marca da bollo) valued at EUR 14.62 (available at tobacconist). Only for non EU members
  • Copy of rental contract (o modulo di cessione del fabbricato debitamente sottoscritto dal proprietario) or other documentation certificating lodging
  • Copy of valid health insurance for the period of study.

The “permesso di soggiorno” is normally issued within 60-90 days.  
 

 

Tax code "codice fiscale"

The tax code (“codice fiscale”) is needed in order to open a bank account, for rent contracts or similar.

The tax code must be requested at the “Agenzia Delle Entrate” (Revenue Agency).

Working hours: Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 1.00pm
Monday and Wednesday from 3.00pm to 5.00pm

In order to request the tax code the following documentation must be presented: copy of the permit of stay or copy of the receipt that the permit of stay was requested, copy of passport (with the personal data and copy of the visa), passport (for verification).

The tax code is issued immediately and is free of charge.
